He came back to life with a jerk, knowing his systems were compromised. His eyelids blinking as they received data. His systems uploaded. Diagnostic checks ran. His optics lit up with reports and errors crossing it. Malfunctions. Insufficient data input. Time logs ...... deactivated. Memory ...... shutdown. Emotions ....... deactivated. Pain receptors ...... turned off. Physical integrity ...... limited. Severe processor damage. Power ...... low. Instinctively he opened his eyes, looking around him. He needed an upload and fast.

  He was a mess.

Do you hear us C model? ..... filtered into his brain.

His optics cleared. Two Cyborgs stood over his crate. Systems check ...... communications. Audio only. "I hear you," he told them verbally. His voice gravelly, still no report to show him how long it had been since his last communication. Error …. Ran across his optic. He could hear them over his neuro net but not communicate via it. …..Neuro net compromised, the report told him.

"You are damaged and found, Cyborg. We will fix you. You are safe here. Welcome to the Cyborg Empire."

From nowhere, impulses flooded his system. A tightness crossed his chest. Another malfunction, he wondered swallowing. Closing his eyes, he checked his systems. He felt …..lighter, stronger, better. We’re his senses on after all? Data flowed. No.

Had he survived ..... to live?

Elenor was a survivor too. She still didn’t quite believe it. The pirate attacks had decimated her community. Their people dead and gone. So many lives lost. Her father, her friend’s fathers, their sons and some of their females too. So few were left to fight, to welcome their saviours when they’d come at last.

The Cyborg Empire had arrived, offered assistance and were deadly, to their enemies. Soldiers made for war and yet, they had shown they had great compassion and were more than that. Wanted more than that. Wanted a future and the elders had agreed. They could stay.

They were searching. For others of their kind and for mates. Those females that triggered their emotions, fired the passions that once awakened, consumed them. Finding many on her world had been a surprise. But not her. She didn’t want that. The cost was too high. People died and left her all alone….

Yet again, unmated females stood near the receiving area for that month’s rotation of Cyborgs in the hope of finding a mate. She ignored them and did her job. Welcoming those women and children joining them to start again and sending them to medical. Glad to see them safe and well, she quickly moved them on. Elenor needed to be busy and not think about what was going around her.

Until the sense of being watched hit her. Turning she saw the Cyborg on the off-ramp watching her. Her mouth dried. He looked like one of those Norse gods of old. She watched as he sniffed the air, his eyes flared and intensely gazed on her.

  O hell no…

  A word from the Author.

Hello, I'm Jessie and I thank you for buying this book! I know you did not have to.

There are so many choices out there. It's a wonderful feeling knowing that someone else will enjoy one of my stories. And for me, it's about telling a story that I'd like to read myself.

I am not caught up in POV or literacy genius. It's simply not me or my style and I will never be that person, so I apologize to all those who are focused on the POV and the genius of literacy. I envy those that are.

On the days where my pain and meds stop my thinking processes, writing these books have been my lifeline. It reminds me that I still have the ability to rise to the challenge and that I refuse to go quietly into the night.

But, I'm a person just like you, who wants to bring some passion into my life and yours, and put a good story out there that's hard to put down, that brings some escapism, sexy fun and pleasure into your reading. We all love a bit of that!

And, I hope I achieve that for you in this book. I sincerely hope you enjoy it so much that you want to look out for the next in the series. (Coming soon) And if I'm lucky, you will have had such a good time, you'll recommend it to your friends and I thank you kindly.

My very best wishes to you and yours. Jessie x

Previously on board the Admiral’s ship, Rage Book 1:……..

The Cyborg from the crate they’d hauled was sitting up on a normal medical bed. Cl
othed, with two of Rages men around him. They were doing something she couldn’t see, they were standing in her way. “Pain.” A voice said. One of the Cyborgs moved a bit doing something else. “Pain.” It said again. Then moved again. “Pain.”

Fuck sake. Kim stormed in. “What the hell are you two doing?”

She stood inside the room hands on her hips going for her best, ‘don’t mess with me’ look. Rage’s men turned to look at her and then, stared at each other for a bit glazing off. Kim guessed they could communicate.

“Cut the shit guys. That’s rude. Speak now.” She told them.

They looked back towards her. “He is damaged. We are trying to fix him.”

“Name’s?” she asked. “I am Torc, this is Brak.”

“Tell me how causing him pain, gets him fixed?”

“There is damage to his circuits and data, physical ability and functions are limited. He has a chest and head injury and has lost an arm. We are not sure where all the malfunctions are or where the worst of the damage is and he cannot tell us. We probe for it and ask him when pain registers. He cannot feel it, his receptors report the pain but are turned off.”

Fuck that! thought Kim. “Seriously? That’s your game plan here, to torture the guy?”

She shook her head and walked over to the newbie in the crate and put her mug down. “Jesus he’s just a kid,” she blurted on seeing him. One Cyborgs moved to the other side of the table opposite her. They both looked at her confused.

“He is 53 universal years. Grown to 20 before birthing.” Torc told her. Kim didn’t hide her surprise.

“So he would be… 73? Doesn’t he age?” she asked suddenly fascinated by the news.

“He’s aging was stopped.” Torc told her. Kim looked back at him.

“You can do that?” He shook his head.

  “No. We can’t. Designers can.”

Kim frowned. They had deliberately stopped this Cyborgs aging for a reason? He looked like a late teen early 20s. That was seriously messed up, thought Kim. “What’s his name?”

  “C583.”

“C583 can you hear me?” She asked gently.

“Yes.” He answered, his voice gravelly, neutral like it was automated and he was not used to speaking. It made him sound robotic not human. Kim frowned deeper. Had they done that too?

“Why is his voice automated and not like yours?

Torc answered again. “His human inflections, his learning, are turned off or damaged.”

Kim seriously wanted to kick shit out of someone. This was just cruel. She looked at C583. “With your permission, I would like to take a look and see if I can help.”

  “Yes.” He told her.

Kim turned back to Torc. “Can he say anything else other than ‘yes’?”

Torc shook his head. “He doesn’t understand you asking for permission to work on him.”

“Why the hell not?” She asked him outraged.

  “Designer’s don’t ask.”

Fuck. Ok that was it. Kim had heard enough. “Out the way big boy, let a professional take a look.” Torc moved. Fucking ‘ Designers’? Kim wanted a word with them with a pointy stick and Mr. Sparky. The back of the kid’s head was open and although his brain was there, so was a large amount of computer hardware and a lot of other stuff that shouldn’t be. OMG. Kim swallowed.

  “You got schematics?” she whispered.

Brak shook his head opposite her. “Nope.”

  Fuck. Helpful.

Kim blew out a breath. If she looked at this like any other engine, she’d need x- rays to check for cracks, damaged wiring and what’s broken. An in-depth scan would also show up faulty wiring and connections. She chewed her lip thinking. Then she could do an infrared scan of the brain working. It would show what was working and what wasn’t.

She looked around the medical room. What looked like a moveable x-ray stood in the corner. “Pull that over here.” She pointed to the machine and Broc went over and got it. “Plug that in.” She showed him the plug and connector. Then set it up to run. “Stand back.” She told the two Cyborgs, then pressed the start button. The arm lifted and moved over the cyborg then stopped. She checked it was good. Then lifted her datapad and called up the diagnostic programme. Lifting it in front of C’s face, she engaged the programme and slowly walked around him coming full circle.

Kim brought it back down and engaged it again. This time to work on the problems it had shown and compared it to the x-ray. “Pain.” C583 called out. Kim looked up confused. Brak had gone back to work. What the fuck!

Kim lost it. “Did I tell you to continue?” she shouted at him. He stood back. Good. “Don’t move a fucking muscle unless I tell you.” She told him pointing her finger at him. This whole situation fucked her off. It seemed to be a Cyborg trait.

She cracked her shoulders and stretched her neck. She was way too tight. The programme stopped and drew her attention back to it. It showed both scans layered one on top of the other. There were highlighted problems all over it. Kim frowned and blew out a breath. The skull was fractured in several places. There appeared to be some organic matter interfering with the major chip. That seemed to filter into everything else that flowed from there. She opened the graphic wider. Some broken wiring sat around it and a piece of something was stuck in there. It didn’t appear to have a purpose. She confused at it. Was that shrapnel? She zoned in on several other bits like it. How was he still functioning? They’d left all that shit in there?

“It looks like this guy has had a severe head injury and it was fixed poorly,” she told them quietly. Not sure what to expect next. She’d heard the rumors like everyone else. Cyborgs were cannon fodder. This one looked like he had been.

Torc nodded. “Sold out for infiltration work. No access to Designers. Field patch job. The tissue mended. Then he was shut down and created.”

“Yeah well, it mended too dam well. There’s shit in there that shouldn’t be. Wiring that’s not working. Foreign objects. Interference all over the place. You need to remove it all and fix it, and the skull needs repairing.” She told them quietly.

Kim didn’t like the idea of cutting open the guys brain. That was just wrong. On every level. “You need a doctor.” She told them quietly.

Torc shook his head. “They won’t work on us.” Kim looked up sharply at him.

  “What?”

“Cyborgs.” He told her like that answered everything. Kim stood shocked.

“They can’t all be assholes?” she whispered. They just stood there. Like they didn’t have an answer for her. She had a sinking feeling that maybe in their world they did. Holy shit. How had this nightmare been allowed? So fucking wrong…..

Damn it. Shouted in her mind taking a deep breath. There was no way she was going to allow this guy to be tortured so he could function. “Do you have any medical tools?” Torc nodded.

  “Get them. Sterilise them.”

“Cyborgs. We don’t get human diseases.”

Kim put her hand up. “Stop with the Cyborg shit. Don’t care, humor me and do it.” She came back to look at the C model in the eyes. They were crystal clear and gray. Quite beautiful.

“Hey.” He looked up at her. Clearly his earing worked.

“I’m Kim. I’m an engineer by trade. A lot of it cutting edge. I’m no doctor but if you’re willing, I can try and fix what is causing you to malfunction. I can’t help you with the medical problems of your chest or arm, but I need your permission before I do anything.” She told him.

C looked at her and gave her a nod. She hoped to god that was his permission and not some tic. Torc came back with a box. He placed it on the table next to C. Kim pulled up what she wanted on her datapad and showed it to the C model. “Can you lock down pain receptors in this area.” It was the worst of the damaged area. She’d need to clear that first before tackling anything else. He gave a shake of his head. That was a no then.

Kim took a deep breath. “We’ll have to knock him out.” She told Brak and
Torc. They looked uncomfortable.

  “Cant.” Brak told her.

  “What?”

“We would have to shut him down to do that.” What the hell. She stared at them both.

“How do we do that and what would that mean?” Kim was beginning to think that this kid, well not a kid, was going to have to stay awake while she cut into his brain and that was just …… sick.

“We would have to stop his heart. And try and re-start it after. We just did that in the cargo bay. Twice in one day, in his condition without a Designer? Not good odds.” He told her plainly.

Kim nodded and blew out a breath. “Ok, we do it tomorrow then.” They shook their heads at her.

“Damage is being corrupted while he’s awake. Leaving it any longer and he may not be salvageable.” Salvageable? Shit. Is that what they called a life? Kim suddenly didn’t want to be there any longer.

She mulled over their options looking for something, anything, that would fix this. Fuck it. Kim looked at the scans again. The C model had a plate over the worst of the damaged area. She guessed that’s where his skull had taken the major damage. It looked like they’d removed the broken skull and the plate put in. The work looked rushed, sloppy. If it had been on her engine she would have fired someone and then kicked their ass. To do this to a living being….? Kim shook her head and couldn’t believe she was considering removing the plate. Doing the work and putting it back, while the guy was awake. She shuddered.
