Abel. A General and Councilman, with the Galactic Cyborg Empire. His mission, see if this new world was a danger to the Empire. If not, could they use it? If it was, destroy it.

He’d earnt his place in the Empire. More than once, he’d taken on great odds and been nearly terminated due to injuries for his efforts. Humans, they’d created them, used and abused them and when it suited them, they’d killed them off, or tried to.

But that was before the wars ended, before Cyborgs were set free to roam the universe. He’d been technically dead a couple of times, putting himself at risk for his brothers, but he was still here, a little worse for wear, still breathing, still fighting for the Empire.

Only this time, it was for themselves. There were mates out there. Mates that triggered their bonding DNA. That were Abel to accept their dominant nature. Abel didn’t see this as a priority. The odds were not in his favour.

He had new worlds to find, abandoned brothers to trace and making those that deserved it, pay.

Christine Casey, known as Coco to her friends, had put up with a lot of shit in her life. Her older adoptive parents, long since dead, she spent a lot of time on her own.

It didn’t bother her. Her one saving grace since she could walk or had been till now, was a knack of putting things back together. She couldn’t really explain it, just knew when something fitted somewhere. Some said it was a recalled memory of a past life. Coco wasn’t so sure about that, she knew what she knew and more often than not, it worked.

Problem was, she’d got ambitious. Reluctantly taking on a seemingly impossible job for the local big wig, thinking that sexy guy from the bar might sit up and take notice and she’d gone and fixed the dam thing! She should have listened to her gut. That, got her noticed and the head honchos came calling with an offer she couldn’t refuse.

She hadn’t got laid, the girls hadn’t come out to play and that sexy guy was long gone. What had she been thinking? Their offer was simple, fix it or say goodbye to her privileges and if she got it done, they’d take her to party! Yuk, hell no.

Now, her ass was on an 80-year-old space ship, that she’d had to put back together, and they expected her to fly it!

Seriously? What planet were they on?

  A word from the Author.

Hello, I'm Jessie and I thank you for buying this book! I know you did not have to. There are so many choices out there. It's a wonderful feeling knowing that someone else will enjoy one of my stories. And for me, it's about telling a story that I'd like to read myself.

I am not caught up in POV or literacy genius. It's simply not me or my style and I will never be that person, so I apologize to all those who are focused on the POV and the genius of literacy. I envy those that are.

On the days where my pain and meds stop my thinking processes, writing these books have been my lifeline. It reminds me that I still have the ability to rise to the challenge and that I refuse to go quietly into the night.

But, I'm a person just like you, who wants to bring some passion into my life and yours, and put a good story out there that's hard to put down, that brings some escapism, sexy fun and pleasure into your reading. We all love a bit of that!

And, I hope I achieve that for you in this book. I sincerely hope you enjoy it so much that you want to look out for the next in the series. (Coming soon) And if I'm lucky, you will have had such a good time, you'll recommend it to your friends and I thank you kindly.

My very best wishes to you and yours. Jessie x

  Chapter One

Coco sat, in what she guessed was the ships Captains chair on the flight deck. She had no idea what half the stuff on it did. It had so many bells and whistles she didn’t know where to start. It didn’t look like any chair she’d ever sat in before and that bothered her. She looked at the controls on the arms and consuls in front of her, wondering again, how she’d got in this mess. Welding the broken shell had been a piece of cake compared with this. Fixing tha
t wiring mess in front of her? Anything but! She had some very basic schematics to work with, that she’d found in a manual of some kind and that was it. She wasn’t even sure, if a pilot ran this ship or a computer did.

The ship had crashed on their colony decades ago. They had no idea who it belonged to. By the time they’d found it, or Hodges had, any survivors were long gone and it had sat there, out in the dust for decades, until Hodges got the brilliant idea that she could fix it. The guy was nuts! She agreed with herself.

Their colony had been on this planet for over 100 years. One of the first, it was said, that had left Earth Corp to seed a new world. Her adoptive parents had told her lots of stories from the generations before them. Some good, some not so good. Getting stranded was one of them. Several generations later, they’d been disowned by Earth Corp some said, left to die, out on the fringe of space, alone. Or so it seemed, until that ship had crashed. Why no one came looking for it at the time, they didn’t know, but conditions on this planet, didn’t make living on top easy.

There’d been a few years of speculation and rumour, she remembered her dad talking about it, some excitement over other expected landings, but they never came. People had lost hope and settled back into surviving. This world wasn’t easy. It had harsh winters, hot summers and raging solar winds that blew up the biting winds that burned your skin.

They’d never got out of the survival tunnels for any length of time. The colonist had been pushed back time and again by the elements. In the end, they realised that if they were to make a go of things, the colony would have to live underground. So, they’d set the tunnel cutters to work. Carved out massive social areas, living accommodations and utilised re-used the glass panels from their ship, for light and precipitation for feeding crops. This world had underground water and was rich in volcanic ore. The soil, under the sand, was good.

They had started mining the volcanic ore as soon as the tunnels were done, in was in their contract and Earth Corp wanted it, but once Earth Corp stopped coming and an accident occurred, they left the mines abandoned and looked to ensure the colonies survival instead.

It had been a large accident at the mine, lives had been lost, shocking the colony. Her dad had told her, they didn’t know it was volatile. Earth Corp had never said. A forge had broken open two winters in, the extreme cold reacting to the extreme heat, spilling the contents into a pile of mineral. The resulting power explosion, told everyone, they had a fuel substance with no real need for it. It was common knowledge, they all knew about it and used small pieces to keep the furness going in winter. It blew hot air around the tunnels keeping them warm.

Until Hodges had created a team to work on it, he wanted it as a fuel. Then came looking for her.

Fuel trials had been going on for months. Hodges and his people kept coming by checking on her work, talking about test runs and getting back to Earth Corp. Like that was possible! Coco knew that talk was insane. She began to wonder if Hodges had lost his mind. If this hulk got off the ground, it would be a miracle and wouldn’t be going far, and then, it had to get safely back down again.

Coco looked at the wiring again. It was a good first try and should get basic function up. She checked the last of the connectors to make sure it was getting a feed, then crossed her fingers and fired it up.

  Here goes nothing..

Systems started to hiss, screens started to blink, lights flashed, a short sparked out and an eerie voice came over the systems, slurred, pitted, breaking up. Then it stopped and everything shut down again.

Shit. Coco threw her magnetic screw driver across the room in frustration. Then everything clicked back on.

The voice was back, stuttered for a moment, then became crystal clear.

“Emergency protocol activated, no connective pilot found. New pilot acknowledged, configuring.” Coco stared at the ships controls for a second, while several things were going on, then felt immense pain at the back of her neck. What the fuck? She tried to move and realised she couldn’t. The last thing Coco heard before passing out, “starting upload.”

Abel liked being on a mission. He was a Cyborg that needed a focus and if his Head of State, Rage, his Admiral, told him to go check out that planet, he was all on board with that.

His ship was one of the fastest in the Cyborg Empire Fleet. Curtesy of Rage’s mate, Kim. She was a genius with an engine. No sooner than she’d found a better way of producing a faster engine, than they were being installed.

The Empire had billions of credits at its disposal. Not only had every Cyborg in the Empire been paid off for Earth Corp creating them, then abusing them, they had been given the resources to search the universe. Once free, the Empire had searched for their brethren. For decades, they travelled space looking for their lost brothers. Helping humans along the way, lost, frightened and alone. They moved from sector to sector, growing their Fleet, adding to their numbers, waging war when they needed to. Finding Pirates, feeding on those less protected had become the norm. They were known throughout their space and had taken care of it. Any spoils were theirs to refit, trade or sell. Now they had new trade routes they guaranteed were theirs, new contracts with worlds liberated from Pirate control only added to their diversity and wealth.

They had better resources to offer new worlds and could offer better protection. The Empire had quickly gained a name for justice and honour. Humans soon came to believe in them. Trusted them and in return, the Cyborgs protected them and offered a better life. It was win win all round.

A chance encounter for the Admiral with a mate, brought new and unexpected horizons. With the knowledge that Cyborgs could have more from this life, that they could have the chance for a future, changed something in them. The Admiral, now HoS, met Kim and it triggered a response in their DNA, none of them could have foreseen. The Admirals neuro net signalled the changes to all those connected to him and spread throughout the Fleet. Cyborgs used neuro pathways to communicate with each other. Most worked, some had been damaged in the wars or deliberately, to prevent them functioning and they were the ones that struggled most. Abel never forgot that. He’d lost many a brother.

He’d been life dead himself, more than once. Humans that had called him brother had tried to kill him off and still he lived. It was the reason he’d taken his name. Abel, like in the old world.

He’d seen the worst of human nature. Nothing surprised him anymore. Even Earth Corp sending out orders, to one of their seeded planets, to come up with a biological weapon, that would wipe out all Cyborgs and those humans with them, hadn’t been a shock. It was practically expected. Some humans, you just couldn’t trust.

Cyborgs had learnt that the hard way and he carried the scars to prove it.

Abel entered his Bridge. “Report,” he called out taking his seat. He had several Cyborgs who’s neuro nets no longer worked and he vocalised for them.

“Objective is 4 days, 8 hours and 5 minutes out.” Abel looked over at Jebb and gave a nod.

“Bring me up to speed on all systems.” He called out.

Coco came too with a blinding headache. She tried to sit forward and found she couldn’t. Her head and body were held immobile. She’d been restrained. Something wet was running down her neck. Her eyes wouldn’t focus. What ……. the …….. hell …… happened? She whispered trying to focus.

“You did not have the connective node for combability with this craft. I have installed the necessary device and software. There will be some discomfort while I attached a neuro pathway to my system.”

Coco barely registered the information before searing pain assaulted her and she passed out again.

  ***

There was a buzzing in her ear. Coco tried to swat it away. She wasn’t sure what it was, but it was annoying.

“…justing sequence.” She heard clearly and turned to look to see the person speaking. Only no one was there. Coco frowned. Was she going crazy? It wouldn’t be a surprise. Everyone was a
little nuts around here. “Checking systems.” The voice said again. Coco turned all way around in her seat, pain caused her head to pound. That was definitely a voice.

She lifted her hand to her head, it was still humming pain in the back of it. “Pain suppressors activated.” Coco looked up, the pain in the back of her neck gone. The back of her head felt fragile.

“What the fuck is going on?” She called out, things were getting hinky.

“Good morning Captain. This is the star ship Caspiane. I am the on-board AI code name Bridgit. I have augmented your systems to comply with mine. We can start repairs as soon as you are ready.” Coco sat open mouthed. The ship was …. Talking! Holy fuck.

“I am not the Captain.” Coco burst out.

There was silence for a moment then a recording of her voice played. It repeated what she’d said coming on board. That Hodges expected her to fly this ship.

“You cannot fly this ship without being the Captain. I have made that possible.” Bridgit told her like it was a necessary action carried out. Simple.

Coco gripped the arms of her chair. Had a machine taken over the ship? Coco took several deep breaths. “Bridgit, what is your purpose and what exactly have you done to me?”
